The story took place a thousand years ago. Ms. Che Jingfang was a beautiful and talented lady. Objecting to the traditional arranged marriage by family heads and matchmakers, Jingfang decided that her future husband must be chosen by herself. All her admirers were requested to write poems at her place, so that the shy but smart lady won a chance to observe the candidates closely and verify their talents and characteristics by herself.
Entering the greeting hall I’m full of joy, I will decide who is the most talented and suitable man in my life 欲前又踟躇,踟躇复彷徨。 Lingering, wandering, I hesitate to make decision Yet it is riskier to let other people take charge of it 兄长他纨绔忒荒唐。 My elder brother is a coxcomb and good for nothing Even if my parent were alive I would still speak up on my own marriage. After reading this poem, I admire and become tenderly attracted to the author I wish to meet my prince charming who’d paint my eyebrows every morning I wish he is an intelligent man with heroic aspiration I wish he is good-tempered and full of witty remarks Today I’ll rank the poems as a unique way of interviewing the candidates A good poem would work better than a serenade to win my heart. The poem is our matchmaker
