Water Sale

This aria is an excerpt from “Wale Sale” which features Playful Female Role in Beijing Opera. It is a good example to demonstrate a performer’s skill of song, dance-acting and stage speech in this art form.  Lady Huang was depressed for being separated from her fiancée Li by her father.  Her maid, Meiying, knew that Li sold water for living each day outside of their garden.  So one day, Mei Ying invited Huang to appreciate flowers so that the couple would meet each other.  In the meantime, Meiying tried to cheer her lady up by making fun of the names of all flowers. 



Banquet for Benefit

这是一出脍炙人口的经典老生戏。 唐朝时,李克用因摔死段國舅,被唐主問斬﹐經程敬思保奏﹐改贬沙陀國﹐後稱王。多年後唐室黃巢造反,唐主命程敬思解珠宝往沙陀國搬兵求救,李克用想起唐天子薄待之前情,收了珠宝礼物,卻不愿發兵。


Minister Cheng Jingsi of the Tang Dynasty got a challenge assignment from the Emperor:  persuade General Li Keyong and his army force to come to his rescue out of a rebellion.  Li was once exiled by the emperor.  He hated the Emperor but valued his friendship with Cheng, as well as the treasurable gifts presented along.    Would he go or no go? The classic aria featuring adult male role will tell you.



Silang’s Escape


Cast: Cynthia Yung (as the Princess), Lv Weizhong (as Silang)



This episode is one of the most popular Beijing Opera plays which is culminated by the duet between the female and male roles.  General Yang Silang from the Song Dynasty was stranded in the enemy’s regime and had to hide his real identity. He was eager to see his mother who led the Song troop to the front post, but was worried about not being able to get the pass. Princess Tie Jing, his wife, learned of his true identity and made up her mind to help him get the pass. The duet is so popular that almost every Beijing Opera fan knows how to sing.


Battle of Wit at the Riverside

Cast: Louisa Huang (as Tan), Sharon Che (as Reverent Mother), Jiang Qing (as the Scholar)




This famous Zhang Performing Style play features Virtuous and Elite Female Role of Beijing Opera.  The story took place in Song Dynasty about 1,500 years ago.  Ms. Tan was beautiful and talented but unfortunately lost her husband. With the help of the Reverent Mother in Qing’an Abbey and her own talent, she started a new chapter of life with Scholar Bai.  The three melodic passages vividly portray the transition of Ms. Tan’s emotion from sorrow, to fear, to shyness and to joy when approached by the young scholar.



Female Warrior Hu Sanniang

这出武旦戏是展示京剧表演艺术中武打功力的代表剧目。故事选自中国古典名著《水浒》。 扈三娘在花园里闻听水泊梁山宋江带领人马前来攻打祝家庄,心中气愤。在扈三娘看来,这些来侵者都是小毛贼,不足惧怕。这段折子是扈三娘全副武装后,召集家丁,准备前去迎战前的心理活动。


The martial play is adapted from the legendary Novel "Men All over the Sea Are Brothers". It involves more choreography than singing.  The Heroine, Hu Sanniang, excelled in martial arts and used a halberd as her weapon. When she learned that some brigands were coming to attack Zhu Village, she was furious.  In her point of view, they were but cowards.  In this scene the fully armed warrior expressed her thoughts prior to the battle through choreography. The skillful combat and martial arts are highlights of the show.



Ode to the West Lake

Beijing opera and Calligraphy.  The Lyric of the solo is adapted from a famous poem by Su Dongpo, one of the greatest poets from China’s Song Dynasty about a thousand years ago.



Female Generals of Family Yang

Cast: Sharon Che (as Commandant Lady Taijun), Beiley Zhang (as Servant Yang Hong)



This sonorous aria featuring Old Female Role of Beijing Opera is selected from the classic whole play, Female Generals of Family Yang, one of the milestones in the history of Beijing Opera. The play is extremely popular since birth, not only because it is a good combination of comedy and tragedy, civil play and martial play, but also because it promotes the value of loyalty, filial piety, chastity, and uprightness.



Female Commandant Mu Guiying

表演者:谢晓贤饰穆桂英                                               Cast: Sarah Xie (as Mu Guiying)


这是一出梅派青衣名戏, 以复杂的身段和高亢的唱腔著称。故事讲述穆桂英年將半百,对宋朝皇帝心灰意冷,本無意接帥印,在佘太君的激勵下,念及國家危亡,頓然振奮,披鎧甲,捧帥印,點眾將,率領大軍出征。

The act is famous for the skillful dance acting and high pitch melodic passage of Mei Lan Fang Performing style of Beijing Opera.  Lady Mu Guiying was a legendary general of Family Yang in the Song Dynasty.   Initially reluctant to accept the emperor’s assignment to act as commandant of the national troop, Mu put aside her resentment against the emperor and overcame self-doubt about her preparedness, and led the troops to defend her country and people.



Farewell, My Lady

Cast: Wang Mei (as Lady Yu Ji), Lv Weizhong (as King Xiang Yu)




This act is one of the most famous classics of Mei Lan Fang performing style of Beijing Opera. Xiang Yu the King of Xi Chu was trapped at Gaixia by his opponent Han troops.  Yu Ji, Xiang’s favorite concubine, sang and danced with her sword in order to cheer up the king.  However it was written that they were to lose the war.  Lady Yu Ji committed suicide with the sword with an attempt to free the King from his care about her.  And so did the King in the end.  The sword dance is the highlight of this act, which depicts the complex emotion of Lady Yu Ji who smiles with tears in heart.



Ode to Love

这首京歌改编自唐朝大诗人白居易的《长恨歌》,它纵情讴歌了唐朝李隆基和杨玉环之间的真挚感情,表达了仙凡永隔,无法相守的遗憾。“玉容寂寥泪阑干,梨花一枝春带雨。” “天长地久有时尽,此恨绵绵无绝期


This opera song is adapted from a famous Tang Dynasty poem,  “My Eternal Regret”.      Lady Yang Yuhuan and Emperor Li Longji love each other but they have to be separated due to political reasons.  Lady Yang was forced to commit suicide; and Emperor Li was forced to resign from his throne.  He misses the deceased from day to night, and from Spring to Autumn.
